Fourteen games
While Red Sox Nation revels in its perfect record on the most recent road trip and ascension to first place, you might want to hold off your Dom Perignon order. Let us not forget our history, lest we be condemned to repeat it.
Everybody remembers that the 1978 Boston Red Sox held a 14-game lead on the New York Yankees in July. People forget that the Milwaukee Brewers were in the mix as well, behind by an at the time insurmountable 10 games. Sound familiar to the current scenario with Baltimore ahead of the Yankees?
We all know the rest of the story and there’s probably not much of a chance it will happen with this team. Still, having seen it happen to probably the best Red Sox team ever (the 1978 Red Sox were a far better team than this one), it’s best to hold off plans for any rollin’ rallies until at least the first day of fall.
